What is Book Coaching?

Book coaching is a form of coaching that focuses specifically on writing and helping a writer develop their story from a wholistic standpoint, meaning that a coach will look at everything from the ground up and beyond and show you how to work with it so that you can write more efficiently, effectively, and have more fun while doing so.
Writing hurts when it’s done in a vacuum, where all you have while writing are thoughts of “is this good enough?”, “should I write this?”, “should I publish it someday?”, “how do I even start?”, “why isn’t this process working out for me?”, “why can’t I actually finish this?”, “why aren’t agents looking at my work?” and so on. It doesn’t help when you have well meaning friends and family who aren’t as invested in the writing process or your particular story, or who don’t know enough about story to give you a good direction. Writing groups can help but sometimes even they can be misguided, giving the wrong type of criticism, using the time for critiquing to socialize, or even just having a lack of knowledge on what a good critique should be.
A book coach can work through all of these problems on a deep level, with writing knowledge, enthusiasm, and a healthy understanding of what it means to give feedback. Think about it like a doctor for a book, diagnosing problems, looking for solutions, and giving you one-on-one care for your story on a deep level with a focus on teaching long term skills for your writing process!
Amplify Book Coaching can help you hone skills like developmental editing, copy editing, proofreading, writing story, problem solving, and outlining for the bigger picture, all while balancing critiques and guidance to help you become the best writer you can be!

FAQ
Are there guarantees when it comes to Book Coaching? Will my book for sure be published if I work with one?
I’m sorry to say there are no guarantees in anything, especially not the publishing world.
A Book Coach can prepare your work for publication, like a resume writer prepares a resume for a job, but cannot guarantee the potential employee can get that job. There is so much surrounding luck, timing, mass audience appeal and so on that a phenomenal book may never be published, and a mediocre book can be doing great in the marketplace. However, a Book Coach can help you feel confident in your writing skills, your books, and in your marketing strategy to give you a better shot. That sense of clarity is so powerful, and if I had started out with a book coach in the beginning of my own writing journey, I might not have been so confused and upset when doing my work alone.
Is a Book Coach like a copy-editor or proofreader?
A copy-editor or proofreader focuses mainly on grammar and sentence mistakes. A Book Coach can and does focus on these elements, but is more of a developmental overseer and project manager of your writing and project as a whole rather than at the sentence level.
Does it matter what stage of the writing process I’m in?
A Book Coach can help with all the stages of writing, whether that be developing a new idea, revising a manuscript, pitching to agents, or all three. It depends on who you want to look at your work and what they offer. Amplify Book Coaching offers assistance at all stages of the process, whether you’re starting out, revising, or need help pitching!
What if I don’t have a book idea but really want to write a book or draw a comic?
This is actually a great time to start coaching! If you’ve always wanted to write a book/comic and have some inkling of what you would like to do, but no idea how to do it, a Book Coach can help tremendously with helping you form and execute a book.
What does my process look like?
Start by emailing me, but my process generally goes as follows – you submit work to me, I edit it and write an evaluation, send it back to you for your review, and then have a coaching call to work out any questions or thoughts and ideas you had when reviewing. I am a very thorough, detailed Book Coach (in the industry it’s called High Touch Coaching), and I make sure that you will be well informed of why I am choosing to comment on the things that I do. You are welcome to ask me questions, and we can tackle big picture issues together through discussion. I want all my writers to feel comfortable, taken care of, and happy during coaching with me.
