What is Book Coaching?

“What is Book Coaching?” It’s the question I get asked most often when people first come to me, and I would love to answer your questions here!
Book Coaching is a newer field of editing, where authors can get more intense support on writing projects. Book Coaching can come in many forms, but all in all book coaching focuses specifically on helping a writer develop their story from a wholistic standpoint, meaning that a coach will look at everything from the ground up and beyond and show you how to work with it so that you can write more efficiently, effectively, and have more fun while doing so.
As a Book Coach, I provide services like:
- Project Management & Accountability
- Developmental Editing
- Copyediting/proofreading
- One-on-one mentoring focused on writing
- Coaching Calls
- Brainstorming sessions
- Intense support for long term projects
- Teaching long term writing skills
- and more!
Book Coaching not only alleviates the pressure of working in a vacuum, where all you have while writing are thoughts of “is this good enough?”, “should I write this?”, “should I publish it someday?”, “how do I even start?”, “why can’t I actually finish this?”, “why aren’t agents looking at my work?” and so on, but it can also save writers from years of heartbreak when writing their stories. Since it’s intense one-on-one work with someone who knows what agents and the broader marketplace is looking for, Book Coaches are a valuable resource for writers who are looking to level up their skills and develop a professional, well laid out story.
FAQ
Will my book be published if I work with a Book Coach?
A Book Coach can prepare a project and the writer for publication, like a resumé writer can prepare you to submit a professional resumé, but cannot guarantee the potential employee can get that job. There are so many factors that can conflict with getting published, like luck, timing, audience reception, general mass market appeal, and more. However, a Book Coach can help you feel confident in your writing skills, in how you tell your stories, and in your marketing strategy to give you a much better shot. Book Coaching can also give you a sense of peace and presence in your writing, and push you to bigger and better places within your writing journey that can be immensely satisfying.
Why would I hire a Book Coach instead of a copy editor or proofreader?
A copy-editor or proofreader focuses mainly on grammar and sentence mistakes. A Book Coach can and does focus on these elements, but is more of a developmental overseer and project manager of your writing and project as a whole rather than just at the sentence level.
Does it matter what stage of the writing process I’m in?
It depends on what each individual Book Coach will offer, but Amplify Book Coaching offers assistance at all stages of the process, whether you’re starting out, revising, or need help pitching!
What if I don’t have a book idea but really want to write a book or draw a comic?
This is actually a great time to start coaching! If you’ve always wanted to write a book/comic and have some inkling of what you would like to do, but no idea how to do it, a Book Coach can help tremendously with helping you form and execute a book.
What does the process look like?
My process is straightforward, detailed, and accommodating. You will submit work to me, I will evaluate it, give it back to you for your review, then we will most likely set up a call where we can go over what strengths and weaknesses are presenting in your writing. Then we will workshop the story together on the call based on the editing I’ve provided and your thoughts on those edits. After the call, I will either send you to revise and resubmit, or we can move forward with the next stage in the process.
After you reach out to me, I will speak with you regarding how we can move forward with your individual project proposal, payment, and how coaching works in general, including expected submission guidelines and editing timelines. If you have any additional questions regarding this, please go to my contact page and set up a call with me so I can answer your questions more thoroughly!
